VOSIED is a Liberian NGO established in 2003, with the objective of promoting sustainable, participatory ecological development through the organisation of grassroots communities. Through this project, the NGO proposes to work with communities living around the Wonegizi forest in the north of the country, on the border with Guinea.
The project area is a tropical rainforest identified by the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) as a priority zone for conservation classification. It covers around 37,906 ha of forest, within and around which 7 communities live, grouped across five villages. These communities, totalling around 9,000 people, rely mainly on agriculture and hunting for their livelihoods, contributing to the progressive destruction of the forest massif and wildlife.
The project aims to reverse the trend of degradation of this rich ecosystem, by organising and raising awareness among neighbouring communities about the need to sustainably manage the resources of the Wonegizi forest, promoting improved agricultural techniques, and developing new activities linked to agriculture.
