Located in central-eastern Madagascar, around a hundred kilometres from the capital, Antananarivo, this two-year project is implemented by the NGO FAMA within the Ankeniheny-Zahamena forest corridor. It covers an area of around 2,000 ha, in a zone where natural resource management has been transferred to a local grassroots community (COBA). A development and management plan has been drawn up, and an 800-ha core conservation zone has been defined.
This forest ecosystem is currently under pressure from agricultural activities, particularly slash-and-burn cultivation (tavy) and the exploitation of forested hillsides.
The project’s objective is to help restore part of the corridor’s forest cover, while simultaneously improving rural communities’ incomes through increased agricultural production on tanety (hillside land).
