A catastrophic environmental phenomenon is spreading in Benin, particularly in the city of Parakou: the burning of used tyres, a common practice for removing hair from goats and sheep intended for consumption, and also used, to a lesser extent, to extract the steel wire coils found within tyres. This raises the issue of air pollution, through the production of greenhouse gases (GHGs). It also unintentionally generates Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) during combustion. Ultimately, it is public health that is put at risk.
This project therefore aims to raise awareness among the populations of Parakou and Benin about the dangers of this practice, through awareness-raising activities, the dissemination of certain articles of the framework environmental law, and above all, training in recycling tyres into other useful products, avoiding the need to burn them.
