Creation of 10 village forests and promotion of income-generating activities

The project covers five villages across three rural communes and will enable ten farming families to place 3 ha of their land under set-aside management. The selected plots will be fenced off, with an income-generating activity (IGA) such as farming or fodder production practised on a small portion of the set-aside zone. The project places particular emphasis on land tenure, securing the regenerated plots through official records drawn up in accordance with both customary and administrative law.

Thanks to the project, women, who do not have land ownership rights, will be among the beneficiaries able to access a plot to develop. The success of the New Tree method has generated strong demand from farmers that the NGO is struggling to meet.

To date, 140 farmer partners have benefited from support. Access to REDD+ funding would help secure long-term financing for activities and sustain the gains achieved.

• Better economic use and sustainable exploitation of 22 community forests covering 110,000 ha. Regenerate 30 ha of degraded land in 5 villages in Burkina Faso’s central plateau with sturdy fencing (using Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration, FMNR);

• Enhance the value of protected sites through income-generating activities (IGAs);

• Strengthen farmers’ capacities so they can continue these activities after the project ends;

• Contribute to global efforts to combat climate change through CO2 absorption by growing trees.
