Known for its rainforest, Gabon’s Ivindo province is a sparsely inhabited area of swampy clearings and salt licks. It is home to more than 1,200 plant species and a rich concentration of wildlife (great apes, elephants, buffaloes, sitatungas, duikers, red river hogs, giant pangolins, etc.).
Within this province, FIGET is a tourist reception facility based in Makokou, operating within Ivindo National Park (PNI). This National Park, officially established in 2002, covers around 300,000 ha.
The association currently runs tourism activities centred on visits to Kongou Falls, where it has installed 4 bungalows with a total capacity of 16 people. 6 local guides, living in nearby villages, currently work for FIGET.
In 2009, 146 tourists from 13 different nationalities visited the area, generating overall revenue of around €53,000.
The project aims to continue protecting the PNI’s environment and biodiversity by promoting tourism activities and reception capacity, while ensuring local populations benefit from the economic returns of this activity.
