Who are we?

West African Primate Conservation Action (WAPCA) an initiative of Heidelberg Zoo created in 2001 to promote the protection of  highly threatened primates of Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire.

Objectives

WAPCA has four key objectives :

 

– Habitat protection and restoration through community empowerment.

– Undertake multi-disciplined research to make evident based conservation decisions

–  Maintain a genetically diverse global captive population through captive breeding and exchange programme

– Inspire, educate and empower through conservation education programmes both in urban and rural environments.

Our actions

  • Effective community based protection of one of the last known habitats of a Critically Endangered primate
  • Implement community patrol teams around primate habitat
  • Create community nurseries to facilitate reforestation activities, buffer zone dilenation and support agroforestry
  • Develop sustainable livelihoods and promote green in organic cocoa and organic coconut oil.
  • Develop transboundary managment plans
