Mission

To protect and safeguard threatened primates and their habitats through an integrated conservation approach.

Actions

  • In situ conservation practice through an integrated model – communities, livelihoods and health

  • Ex situ conservation practice through the breeding of a reserve population for conservation translocation

  • Applied research to greater our understanding of the threatened primates, promoting primatology in range country, to evaluate our work and ensure all decisions are evidence based

  • Conservation education: creating engaging and powerful educational material for a wide demographic to install a love and appreciation of the natural world, believing if you love something you will protect it.

History

WAPCA was established in 2001 by the Heidelberg Zoo in partnership with the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission of Ghana, with members from several zoological collections. In the beginning, the Heidelberg zoo had a population of Roloway cercopithecines and wanted to support an in situ project at a time when zoological collections were being transferred to conservation organisations.
