The project operates in the highlands of central Madagascar. It focuses on the last remaining natural forest in this area, home to the endemic Tapia tree species. This tree hosts an equally endemic silkworm, which produces wild silk used in traditional craftwork.

The project’s objective is to improve the income of households living near Tapia forests, through silk production.

Principales activités

• The sustainable management of 6,800 ha of Tapia forest by local communities, through the establishment of firebreaks, the reforestation of 30 ha of Tapia, and the control of forest encroachment by non-native pine species;

• The intensification of silk cocoon production through mastered rearing cage techniques

• The local spinning, weaving and dyeing of silk, rather than selling raw cocoons, as these processing activities generate the bulk of the added value

• The promotion of direct on-site sales and marketing of silk products

• The strengthening of ecotourism promotion already underway in the area
