The project is located in central-eastern Madagascar, in the province of Toamasina. This area, characterised by mid-altitude dense humid forests, is currently threatened by strong human pressures such as slash-and-burn agriculture, hunting and illegal logging.

In Madagascar, Community-Based Organisations (COBA) exist, tasked among other responsibilities with managing natural resources.

The project specifically aims to strengthen the capacity of 8 community-based organisations (COBA) in managing the natural resources of five rural communes covering around 6,000 ha.

The project, implemented by Voakajy, involves 8 villages, 200 families and 2,000 people.

Principales activités

• Provide technical assistance to local populations so that they are able to manage natural resources autonomously and sustainably. Training will be conducted on data collection for threatened and non-threatened species across the 8 terroirs, inventories will be drawn up, and monitoring of hunting and logging will also be carried out

• Increase forest cover in the project area through reforestation activities: 80 ha will be reforested, i.e. 5 ha per year per COBA

• Draw up 8 specifications documents, 8 management plans, 8 management contracts formalised by the administration, and 8 DINA (traditional Malagasy regulations defining the penalties incurred for non-compliance with the management rules imposed by the community)
