With over 3,000 kilometres of coral reefs, the coastline of Madagascar forms one of the richest ecosystems in the entire Indian Ocean. These marine ecosystems are home to a great many species and are essential for sustaining the livelihoods of numerous Malagasy communities, including the Vezo communities, who depend directly on marine resources for food, income and cultural identity.

However, coral reefs face numerous threats, currently experiencing unprecedented degradation, partly caused by increasingly frequent periods of rising water temperatures in the Indian Ocean.

For several years, the association Blue Ventures has been working, in partnership with local populations, to establish Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) along Madagascar’s south-western coast.

Blue Ventures’ PPI project, implemented near the commune of Andranopasy, aims to create a marine extension of the terrestrial Kirindy Mite National Park.

Principales activités

• the creation of a regional research centre to assess the current state of fisheries resources, conduct socio-economic surveys, and involve local populations in order to better understand the local context of natural resource exploitation

• a proposed zoning plan and management plan for the future MPA

• the creation of this MPA should indeed help ensure the long-term sustainability of one of Madagascar’s most important coastal and marine ecosystems, while supporting the economic development of local populations and Vezo fishers

• the MPA will be established in partnership with the public body responsible for managing Madagascar’s protected areas, Madagascar National Parks (MNP)
