The project operates in the Collines department in central Benin, around the Monts Kouffé and Agoua classified forests. It builds on the achievements of the NGO FAT in organising the protection of 2,000 hectares of forest across Tobé, Moro and Adjiro by traditional hunters’ organisations, with the support of the King of Banté, in agreement with the forestry administration.

The project proposes extending the Adjiro forest gallery to the Djagballo forest (8,000 hectares). The 3 main objectives are:

– the protection of fauna and flora;
– the development and management of the forest;
– the generation of income to reduce pressure on natural resources.

Principales activités

• The definition of forest management rules with communities and the administration, the participatory drafting of the corresponding management contract, combining customary law with administrative law, and its implementation under the supervision of hunters’ organisations and land chiefs. These rules will prohibit hunting of large fauna and permit the collection of non-timber products

• Hunter groups already active in the protected zones will come and explain to their counterparts in Djagballo the methods for monitoring, wildlife counting and trap removal

• The creation of an 18 km track to improve forest management and monitoring, and to facilitate the exploitation of its resources as authorised under the management contract (honey, non-timber products)

• The development of forest beekeeping with 150 hives as an alternative to hunting
