Preserving the wetlands of the Keta lagoon complex

The Keta Lagoon Ramsar site (30,000 ha) is located in the southern part of the Volta Region, in a savanna area of south-eastern Ghana. It is a plain running parallel to the ocean coastline for 40 km, comprising the lagoon, a strip of land separating it from the sea, and a system of small lakes, lagoons, marshes and mangroves, home to rich birdlife typical of these ecosystems and 3 species of marine turtles.

Large parts of the landscape are degraded due to agricultural encroachment, slash-and-burn practices and mangrove overexploitation, and certain channels are blocked or choked by algae and solid and liquid waste.

The project aims to secure these ecosystems and manage them sustainably.

Activities will be concentrated in 6 villages: Anyanui, Dzita, Tunu, Bomigo, Galo and Salo, out of the 70 existing villages, covering an area of 2,000 ha of wetland, and will directly involve 60 people (30 women and their households).

Principales activités

• a memorandum of understanding is signed with landowners across the 6 villages, so that each makes 0.22 ha available to the project to set up 6 nurseries;

• 30 villagers (5 per village x 6 villages) are trained in nursery techniques, to reforest 6 ha of forest with native tree species (Dalbergia, etc.);

• 100 ha of mangroves are reforested with Avicennia and Rhizophora (111,000 seedlings);

• 500 m of channels are cleared of invasive algae and aquatic plants;

• leaders from the 6 communities draw up a local by-law defining rules for managing the resources of the Keta lagoon, validated by the Wildlife Division and the District administration;

• capacity building for 50 people on environmental legislation;

• 60 villagers (10 per village x 6 villages) are employed in income-generating activities such as mat weaving, grasscutter farming, and beekeeping.
