The NGO NEBEDAY is a Senegalese association that supports local populations in organising village associations for the protection of their natural resources, community forest management, the planting of useful trees, and the establishment of value chains for natural resources (moringa, bissap, honey, shellfish), and has demonstrated a strong capacity to mobilise villages.

To combat deforestation, NEBEDAY aims to develop a straw charcoal value chain through briquette manufacturing in three administrative regions: Fatick, Kaolack and Tambacounda.

Wood, the country’s main energy source, is currently overexploited. Gradually replacing it with straw charcoal would reduce wood consumption, bushfires and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and promote natural regeneration, while helping meet the essential needs of disadvantaged populations.

This project may be eligible for the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Funding from Wallonia Cooperation is focused on this aspect, with support from specialised international consultancy firms.

14,500 ha of forest (9,500 ha in Saloum and 5,000 ha in the Tambacounda region) will be involved, and 405 women will be directly engaged in straw charcoal production.

The production of 2,700 tonnes of straw charcoal will meet the energy needs of 5,000 households, i.e. around 45,000 people.

Principales activités

• After 2 years, 10% of households in 5 urban centres switch from charcoal to straw charcoal, thanks to the installation of 26 rural pyrolysis units and 13 urban briquetting units managed by 39 women’s Economic Interest Groups (EIGs) (300 women). Straw collection, carbonisation, binder mixing, pressing and drying activities are developed

• 13,000 tonnes of wood are saved and 2,600 tonnes of straw charcoal are produced over 2 years

• A carbon credit valorisation dossier will be submitted under the Gold Standard or AMS-I.C. methodology

• The establishment of management plans for the forests of Sangako (2,200 ha), Wélor (6,300 ha), Pindane (1,000 ha) and Kothiary (5,000 ha)

• The establishment of 4 nurseries, each producing 10,000 seedlings/year (around 80,000 seedlings in total), enabling the planting — as firebreaks along the edges of forests where straw has been harvested — of 40,000 cashew trees and 5,000 endangered native species (Khaya senegalensis, Detarium microcarpum, etc., used by local populations for their medicinal, food and/or construction properties)

• Six cooperatives will be established: 4 in rural areas (one cooperative per forest) and 2 in urban areas (Kaolack and Tambacounda); 300 stable jobs and additional indirect jobs are created, helping professionalise women and improve local populations’ living conditions

• DEFICHARPA is economically profitable and financially self-sustaining
