The forests of Kpinkonzoumè and Houanvè are among the still relatively preserved patches of vegetation in south-eastern Benin. Periodically flooded by the Ouémé River, these forests are home to two endangered mammal species, the sitatunga antelope and the red-bellied guenon (Cercopithecus erythrogaster). They are overexploited due to strong human pressure.
The project’s objective is the conservation of these forests by local populations, who alone have the power to safeguard them.
