The project, implemented by the ASITY association, covers four different sites in north-western Madagascar: the villages of Boeny Aranta, Ampitsopitsoka, Antsakoamanera, and the villages south of Lake Kinkony.
Owing to its ecological and economic importance, the Mahavavy-Kinkony wetland complex has now been classified among the very high ecological priority New Protected Areas (NAP) currently being established in Madagascar. Indeed, it serves as a refuge for numerous endemic and threatened species, both terrestrial and aquatic. These species are distributed across the various natural habitats found there — lakes, rivers, marshes, mangroves, and dense dry forests.
This rich ecosystem is under very strong external pressure, notably from overfishing, slash-and-burn agriculture, bushfires, population growth, and the illegal exploitation of natural resources in mangroves and forests. Effective natural resource management, capable of preserving this 40,000-ha ecosystem while contributing to the economic development of the 650 inhabitants across the 26 villages in the area, is therefore a priority.
The project’s main objective is to support the local communities (CoBa) of the Complex in the sustainable management of their natural resources.
