Support for the development of sustainable whale-watching ecotourism in Sainte-Marie

Whale-watching ecotourism is one of Sainte-Marie Island’s key assets. However, local communities have not yet taken ownership of this activity, owing to limited access and training, as well as cultural differences with the flagship establishments offering the best services. The economic benefits for them are relatively low, even though this activity should be a driver of sustainable community development and a fantastic means of whale conservation. In addition, there is a real divide between the south and the still underdeveloped north of the island.

Whale watching will be sustainable if communities embrace whales as part of their heritage, learn about whales and their environment, and master the code of good conduct that ensures the animals’ wellbeing, their annual return, and mutual respect between operators.

The project’s objective is to support the development and promotion of sustainable whale-watching ecotourism among small operators and local communities, particularly in the island’s underdeveloped northern half.
