ROSE brings together Cameroonian NGOs from the Tri-National Sangha and TRIDOM landscapes to develop participatory natural resource management strategies and good governance in the forestry and mining sectors.
This project builds on a component initiated with 5 Community Forests (CF) under a previous PPI grant in the Boumba-et-Ngoko department, which delivered satisfactory results in terms of the economic impact linked to the exploitation of NTFPs. Their valorisation, in particular, helps involve women and indigenous peoples (Bantu, but also Baka Pygmies) in forest management and provides them with income derived from forest resources.
Given the success of this first initiative, ROSE aims to develop the NTFP value chain more widely across 5 CFs (Bénéka, Mbielabot, Codduma, Bogrisom, Mirebee), representing a total of 25,000 ha, 4 of which had already been involved in the previous PPI project.
The project will directly organise 10 new groups of NTFP collectors. 400 people, mostly women and Baka Pygmies, will also benefit from the project, as will consumers who will gain access to larger quantities of high-quality processed NTFPs, and NTFP traders — organised into Common Interest Groups (GIC) and holding a licence authorising them to purchase NTFPs — who will have easier access to the products.
As ROSE is a network of associations, its philosophy is to involve its member organisations: AIPDCT, CIFAD, CIFED, GRIPE and ORADER will therefore jointly implement the project. AAFEBEN, also a ROSE member and a beneficiary, over the same period, of a PPI grant with similar objectives in the neighbouring area on the periphery of the Dja Biosphere Reserve, will be called upon to help develop the Market Information System, share information on NTFPs, and identify market outlets.
