The Lake Ahémé region is an area very rich in biodiversity, offering considerable ecotourism potential that could contribute to safeguarding the region’s endangered species. It is located within the south-western Benin wetland complex known as Ramsar site 1017. Tourist numbers are already significant in this part of southern Benin, owing to the presence of hotel complexes. However, the type of tourism currently on offer falls short of a professional, sustainable quality standard. There is therefore a need to propose alternative ways of exploring the region that are respectful of the environment and local communities.
In addition, the main source of income for local communities is fishing, resulting in the overexploitation of the lake’s fisheries resources. In this context, it is important to demonstrate to local communities that wildlife and flora can have a direct economic value and contribute to their region’s development, thereby encouraging them to protect their habitat and natural environments.
The project’s ultimate objective is to contribute to the sustainable development of the Lake Ahémé region through the preservation and valorisation of its natural resources, by promoting ecotourism.
