In Burkina Faso, village hunting interest zones (ZOVIC) have been established to preserve the natural environment within village lands, while enhancing the value of wildlife and non-timber forest products for the benefit of local populations.
The association AFAUDEB, present in eastern Burkina Faso since 2004, works across around twenty villages located on the periphery of protected areas. Its objective is to support local communities in preserving and enhancing the value of their territory’s natural resources. Most of the association’s activities began in the village of Boumoana as a pilot initiative.
The project’s coverage area lies within the communes of Fada N’Gourma and Matiakoali. More specifically, it covers villages within the peripheral belt of three adjoining wildlife reserves.
Within these areas, land clearing, uncontrolled bushfires and other practices are today seriously threatening the local ecosystem.
The project’s objective is to help preserve and enhance the value of the environment, wildlife and non-timber forest products, for the benefit of 15 villages, representing nearly 300 families, spread across 4 ZOVICs.
Over two years, AFAUDEB will support the existing ZOVICs of Boumoana and Sadpenga in their development process, and will help establish two new ZOVICs.
