The Mourindi/Doussala area is located on the eastern periphery of Moukalaba-Doudou National Park (PNMD) (4,500 km²), 400 kilometres south of Libreville. Beyond the beauty of its landscapes and the region’s high biological diversity, it is the strong concentration of primates that sets it apart: the PNMD is the world’s second most important site for great ape protection, with primate density five times higher than human population density. Human-wildlife coexistence has become difficult, as poverty forces villagers to place strong pressure on natural resources.
The project’s main objective is the development of ecotourism by rural communities, in order to preserve and enhance the biodiversity of this area, rich in primates (gorillas and chimpanzees), and to provide village communities with an alternative source of income.
