The project, led by the coordination of Local Guidance and Decision-making Bodies (ILOD), will cover an area of around 27,000 ha and reach 50 villages, representing nearly 65,000 inhabitants. As the resources of this area had been weakened by years of drought and poor exploitation practices, local populations have been supported by numerous development and natural resource management programmes, the oldest of which are those run under German cooperation. In 2003, aware of the scarcity of the resource on which they depend, the population drew up an intercommunity charter to help plan exploitation activities. This charter was revised, updated and validated in 2010 for a 10-year period, meaning it remains valid until 2020.
This project aims to preserve the biodiversity of the area and contribute to the socio-economic development of the local population.
Its specific objectives are, on the one hand, to support natural resource management efforts through the development of annual management plans, lake surveillance, and annual fisheries monitoring, and on the other, to develop economic activities linked to the management of the 3,600 ha of lakes.
