The traditional organisations of the villages surrounding the Tobé forest (12,000 ha) have come together around their king, the King of Banté, and the hunters’ brotherhood to establish rules for the protection, monitoring and management of wildlife and natural resources. In doing so, they have succeeded in effectively restoring this forest’s biodiversity.

This project proposes extending these achievements to the Adjiro forest gallery (8,000 ha), located south of the Monts Kouffé classified forest in the Collines department in central Benin.

The objectives fall into three categories:

– strengthening the traditional management of natural resources;
– development of the area;
– the development of forest beekeeping.

Principales activités

• Facilitation sessions and discussions help define and implement management rules and a management contract;

• The creation and maintenance of tracks facilitate the movement of people and livestock and enable better control of their movements, which helps preserve wildlife habitat. A water point allows livestock to be watered outside the forest

• The development of forest beekeeping generates income at an attractive cost/benefit ratio (90,000 FCFA for a beekeeper with 5 hives over one month of work, i.e. an income of 6.3 million FCFA for 350 hives)

• Setting up a monitoring system for the area
