The Kalissaye Bird Reserve (ROK) was established in 1978. Now designated as a ZICO (Area of Importance for Biodiversity and Bird Conservation) and a Ramsar Site (Wetland of International Importance), the reserve is also a Centre for Education, Awareness and Partnership (CESP) and a member of Wetlands Link International (WLI).
Covering an area of 30,014 ha, the reserve is home to a wide variety of ecosystems: mudflats, dunes, sandbanks, mangroves, gallery forests, palm groves and islets. It is managed on a participatory basis, bringing together the administration (the State), the local authority (the municipality) and local communities (the management committee).
