Mission

Raising local communities’ awareness of biodiversity conservation, supporting communities in fighting poverty, ensuring community-based conservation and valorisation of biodiversity, and supporting communities in finding solutions to human-wildlife conflict.

Actions

  • Awareness-raising: running a permanent community awareness programme in the action area.

  • Poverty reduction support: identifying and implementing income-generating activities, strengthening beekeeping and orchard value chains.

  • Biodiversity conservation and valorisation: strengthening ecological monitoring of high-value sites, laying the groundwork for ecotourism.

  • Human-wildlife conflict mitigation: continuing to trial beehive fences to mitigate human-elephant conflict.

History

NGUDU DIMBU is an association founded on 1 December 2018 by the sons and daughters of the Peny villages, located in the north of Moukalaba-Doudou National Park (MDNP). Its vision is to make its area of intervention (MDNP) a place where people live in harmony with their environment while meeting their needs. The association was created because the communities in the north of Moukalaba-Doudou National Park find themselves located both within the national park and within the Sustainably Managed Forest Concession (CFAD) of the Compagnie des Bois du Gabon (CBG), with no paid employment and with their customary rights restricted. As a result, the villages emptied out, and the few remaining residents turned to hunting as a source of income, increasing conflicts with the managers of the park and the CFAD. In addition, the few remaining villagers live in camps to guard their plantations and protect their crops from being destroyed by elephants. NGUDU DIMBU was therefore created by its founders (sons and daughters of the Peny village) to find solutions to these problems.
