Promote the sustainable conservation of non-human primates through the mass education, research and awareness program in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mission
Actions
- Strengthen local capacities through short- and long-term training programs in Primatology: by identifying training needs; by selecting trainers in the various areas identified; by developing training modules (drafts, discussions, harmonization and validation); and by selecting agents to be trained in the various biodiversity conservation areas.
- Promote and support local revenue-generating initiatives as long as they are in harmony with the conservation of primates and biodiversity and reduce pressure on natural resources: conducting socioeconomic surveys in the environment where primates live to obtain basic data on target populations; identifying the types of income-generating activities to be promoted in different identified environments; and by developing projects to support income-generating activities according to the needs expressed.
- Compile data on research and the conservation status of different primate species and promote the dissemination of information: developing information research projects on the conservation of primates and their natural habitat, and the mechanism for disseminating information in the community; organizing workshops, panel discussions, and radio broadcasts, releases launched in schools, churches and primate information leaflets or newsletters to disseminate information; and by launching a primate conservation program in collaboration with partners.
History
Primate Expertise launched in 2019 the implementation of the Grauer gorilla conservation project in Kahuzi-Biega National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In order to contribute to the protection of the Grauer gorilla, in constant decline, and its high-altitude habitat, PEx, in accordance with its mission and vision as well as in strategic partnership with the Kahuzi-Biega National Park (PNKB) and the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN), has defined priority actions that can produce a long-term sustainable impact: a stable and growing population of Grauer’s gorilla in the PNKB.
