History

Programa Tatô has been at the forefront of marine conservation in São Tomé and Príncipe, promoting an integrated approach that combines scientific research, community engagement, advocacy and environmental education. Its history dates back to 1998, when the first sea turtle protection initiatives emerged in the country—at a time when their capture and consumption were still widespread practices. Since then, Programa Tatô has continued to grow and evolve, transforming from a small project into a nationally and internationally recognized conservation program in marine conservation, sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystems, and community development. Formally established in 2018, Programa Tatô has consolidated itself as an organization that combines science, innovation and local knowledge to respond to complex environmental and social challenges. Its work is grounded in the conviction that protecting biodiversity and improving the living conditions of coastal communities are inseparable goals. Over the past years, this commitment has translated into concrete results: a significant reduction in the capture of sea turtles, the economic reconversion of former hunters, the strengthening of national and international partnerships, and the growing recognition of Programa Tatô’s impact both in the country and in the region.
