Promoting the use of geospatial technologies and scientific research for the sustainable management of natural resources by communities around protected areas, in order to preserve elephant habitat.
Mission
Actions
-
Action research: improving socio-economic and environmental knowledge of protected areas and their peripheries through studies, environmental education, and contributing to Ma Mbed Mbed National Park’s management plan.
-
GIS & AI promotion: drone-based ecological monitoring of elephants, training local mappers in GIS and remote sensing, and participatory mapping of land use, natural resources and migratory corridors.
-
Income-generating activities: promoting agro-ecological practices and sustainable forestry techniques, developing value chains (cashew, balanites, neem), promoting green energy (biochar) and supporting women’s and youth farmer organisations.
-
Organisational development: improving governance and member capacity, communication, and equipment quality.
History
GEOTECH (Geographers and Geospatial Technologies) is a Cameroonian organisation officially registered on 15 June 2020 (receipt N16/RDA/D42/SAAJP) by the Prefect of Mayo-Louti Department in Guider. Its vision is to popularise geospatial technologies and foster a world more mindful of environmental values, by supporting community initiatives and decentralised local authorities, mainstreaming the concerns of women, youth and vulnerable groups into socio-economic development, protecting the environment by involving populations of ecologically fragile areas, and training people in remote-sensing tools (GIS and CAD). GEOTECH was created in response to worsening environmental degradation and recurring human-elephant conflict and land-use conflicts in Mayo-Kani Department, particularly around Ma Mbed Mbed National Park (PN3M), drawing inspiration from the work of the Clean Technology Promotion (CTP) consultancy in Garoua.
